Why Moisturizing Your Skin is Important 01/11/2010
Doctors and a lot of other people (and even big companies) tell you all the time to moisturize your skin. But do you really know why moisturizing your skin is important? While many think that the only benefit of moisturizing the largest organ of your body a.k.a. your skin, is to prevent and treat dryness, the fact is that it is not all they do. They protect sensitive skin, improve skin tone and texture, and masks imperfections. A basic law of beauty tells us that everyone, regardless of skin type, should moisturize. Even if your skin is oily, it will still be advantageous for you to moisturize (except for those with acne). This is because of one simple reason – moisturizers seal in the moisture on your skin. It's like putting a cling-on wrap on the skin to lock in the moisture. This protects the skin and aids it in the proper shedding process of the skin, which is the basically responsible for the skin's smoother texture. Individuals with skin asthma problems or eczema also benefit from the use of moisturizers as this helps keep their skin hydrated. As we all know, dryness causes itchiness to people with eczema and moisture relieves them from such an uncomfortable feeling. Changes in weather conditions, environment, temperature and the sun all affect your skin's level of moisture and one way to combat such effects is to constantly moisturize. Constant and regular moisturizing will help your skin maintain its vibrant elasticity, radiance and prevent fine lines, wrinkles and premature skin aging. Being aware of what moisturizers can do is not enough, you actually have to moisturize. And in choosing the best moisturizers, remember to go organic! Exfoliating is not just about rubbing your skin. It's also about finding the best exfoliating tools to do the right job for your skin. Take for example your heels and elbows where your skin is usually rough. These rough spots need more exfoliating action from the scrubbing medium to effectively clear out those dead skin cells. ![]() Loofah & Gloves > This is a mainstay tool that most bathrooms have. Moisten the loofah well so it will soften and apply a shower gel for easy scrubbing. While it is effective in scrubbing and removing the top layer of the epidermis, it is also a hotel for bacteria so always remember to thoroughly rinse it to wash off dirt and traces of soap. A better way of rinsing it is by running it under warm water and then hang the loofah to dry. ![]() Pumice Stone > Pumice is a light, porous lava ejected from a volcano. It is best used in rough spots like heels and elbows. It is also great for callouses. ![]() Body Brush > This can either be used dry or wet. When using it wet, moisten it well and use a shower gel for easier exfoliation. Dry brushing is also very beneficial for the skin not only because it removes layers of dead skin but it also tightens the skin to prevent premature aging, stimulates circulation, promotes movement of the lymphatic system, increases your level of stimulation, reduces skin infections and irritations and of course, it softens and smoothens your skin. ![]() Buffing Sponge > Sponges are best for dry and sensitive skin. Use with a gently cleanser and match it with gentle circular scrubbing motion. ![]() Microdermabrasion > Also known as Microderm, it is a cosmetology procedure used in most day spas and medical spas. Procedure is not very painful and does not require anaesthetic. There are several types of microdermabrasion like Crystal Microderm, Diamond Microderm and Home Microderm. It is designed not only to remove layers of dead skin cells but also to reduce scars, lesions, stretch marks, etc. This procedure is quite expensive and require frequent visits to take effect. ![]() Exfoliation Creams > These are creams, gels, polishes, body scrubs that contain grains or beads that gently exfoliates the skin. Always look at the ingredients of the scrub creams that you are buying because some of them might contain plastic micro beads that can cause harm to your skin and to our environment. Remember to choose products that contain only natural and organic ingredients so you can be sure that only the best products come in contact with your skin. **Trivia: Did you know that plastic microbeads are also called Nurdles or Mermaid Tears. They are plastic resin pellets and is a major contributor to marine debris. Marine life is threatened with these nurdles because creatures like krill and other small fishes choke on these plastic pellets and die prematurely and instantaneously. ![]() Salts & Sugars > You can make your own salt or sugar scrub by mixing it with a healthy oil such as olive oil or virgin coconut oil. Choose only the best ingredients for your exfoliating needs. Choose SPA Ingredients. :) Click here to check out our organic body scrubs or click here to see our luxurious Epsom salt scrubs. Exfoliate: Doing It The Right Way 07/22/2009
If you want to keep your skin looking radiant, healthy and youthful, you must exfoliate regularly. By removing the top layer of the dead skin cells, you are making room for your new cells which makes your skin appear smoother, softer and less wrinkled skin. Exfoliate: Why You Should Do It Regularly 07/21/2009
If you are an avid user of soap during bath time (which I hope you are), then you should be aware that you must not only cleanse your skin of dust, germs and other unwanted particles but you should also take time to remove the dead skin cells in your body through exfoliation. Healing and Its Process 06/30/2009
Want to know how healing works? Eczema Problems? Treat them Naturally. 06/04/2009
If you are suffering from skin inflammation or as some would call it, Dermatitis or Eczema, then you might be surprised with how Virgin Coconut Oil can cure this problem. The use of anti-bacterial soaps has recently been connected with the occurrence of cancer. Many natural organic soaps enthusiasts feel that many consumers are not fully aware of the effects of using such harmful soaps and should therefore be warned about the toxic results it might bring about. Because of the very good advertising campaigns and strategies of commercial soap manufacturers, consumers are all made to believe that they are being protected by chemicals such as MIT (methylisothiazolinone) from infectious microbes when in fact, it is our healthy immune systems that protects us from such bacteria. That mythology promoted by soap manufacturers these days have defined many of our household consumer's soap selection process. Unlike with the use of natural organic soaps , the harsh reality is that the usage of such harmful soaps may cause serious illnesses like nervous system damage and even worse, Cancer. Let us tell you about some neat facts about your skin: 1. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. 2. Your skin absorbs everything that you put on it. 3. Your skin needs to breathe as well. Since your skin is the largest organ in your body and the most exposed at that, you have to protect it like you would protect your heart. You can start doing this by shifting to natural organic soaps. Many people think that skin is just an outer layer to protect your guts or insides. While that is true, it is also vulnerable to diseases due to chemicals and harmful fragrances or additives. So anything you put on your skin is gently absorbed by it and whatever you put on your skin can cause many different things to it. An example of this is using perfumed soaps or simply soaps loaded with perfume. Let us just clarify that most perfumes used in commercial soaps are not essential soaps harvested from flowers or plants in the field somewhere. They are synthetic chemicals, manufactured in a chemical plant and many are highly carcinogenic. Imagine that every single day, you do this and you walk around and produce sweat which moistens your skin and accelerates the diffusion of harmful chemicals into your bloodstream. If you can only hear your skin gasping for air and help. If you do this every day, you should not wonder why you are diseased. You feel you are clean because you are using a soap labeled with “anti-microbial” and it smells like perfume. Before you know it, you have aged faster because the soaps you are using are stressing your skin! Natural organic soaps can never do this to your skin. They treat your skin like how a mother would treat her baby. Natural organic soaps nourishes, moisturizes, clears out dirt without killing the life from your skin and it heals. Here is a short list of cancer-causing ingredients that are commonly present in industrial soaps and which natural organic soaps are proud NOT to have: Alcohol A colorless, volatile, flammable liquid produced by the fermentation of yeast and carbohydrates. Alcohol is used frequently as a solvent and is also found in beverages and medicine. As an ingredient in ingestible products, alcohol causes body tissues to be more vulnerable to cancers. Mouthwashes with an alcohol content of 25% or more have been implicated in mouth, tongue, and throat cancers. AHA's Alpha Hydroxy Acids, ie. Glycolic, Lactic Acid. *Exfoliates the outer layer of skin exposing fresh, young, immature cells that can easily be damaged by UV rays and other factors that can age the skin or cause wrinkles. *Exfoliates: The scaling off of dead tissue. (Tabor's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary) Aluminum A metallic element used extensively in the manufacture of aircraft components, prosthetic devices, and as an ingredient in antiperspirants, antacids, and antiseptics. Scientific fact: Aluminum is linked to Alzheimer's Disease. (goes right to the brain!) Animal Fat (Tallow) A type of of animal tissue made up of oily solids or semisolids that are water-insoluble esters of glycerol with fatty acids. Animal fats and lye are the chief ingredients in bar soap, a cleaning and emulsifying product that acts as a breeding ground for bacteria. Collagen An insoluble fibrous protein that is too large to penetrate the skin. The collagen found in most skin care products is derived from animal fat and ground up chicken feet. This ingredient forms a layer of film that mat suffocate the skin. DEA (diethanolamine) Do your shampoos, toothpaste, and bubble baths contain DEA (diethanolamine)? DEA, which is readily absorbed through the skin, is a potentially cancer-causing ingredient found in many mainstream cosmetics and toiletries. Reacts with nitrates in cosmetics to form another potential carcinogen/DEA. Dioxins A potentially carcinogenic by-product that results from the process used to bleach paper at paper mills. Dioxin-treated treated containers transfer dioxins to the product itself. Elastin of High-molecular Weight A protein similar to collagen that is the main component of elastic fibers. Elastin is also derived from animal sources. It's effect on the skin is similar to collagen. Fluorocarbons A colorless, non-flammable gas or liquid that can produce mild upper respiratory tract irritation. Fluorocarbons are commonly used as a propellant in hairsprays. Formaldehyde A toxic, colorless gas that is a irritant and a carcinogenic. When combined with water, formaldehyde is used as a disinfectant, fixative, or preservative (Funeral Homes). Formaldehyde is found in many cosmetic products and conventional nail care systems. Fluoride Found in toothpastes. Is not safe-- as noted by the scientific community as a carcinogen. Kills approximately 10,000 people a year (not presented to us by the media). Kaolin A fine white clay used in making porcelain. Like bentonite, kaolin smothers and weakens the skin. Also used in putting out forest fires! Lanolin A fatty substance extracted from wool, which is frequently found in cosmetics and lotions. Lanolin is a common skin sensitizer that can causes allergic reactions, such as skin rashes. Mineral Oil A derivative of crude oil (petroleum) that is used industrially as a cutting fluid and lubricating oil. Mineral oil forms an oily film over the skin to lock moisture, toxins and wastes, but hinders normal skin respiration by keeping oxygen out. Petrolatum A petroleum-based grease that is used industrially as a grease component. Petrolatum exhibits many of the same harmful properties as mineral oil. Propylene Glycol Called a humectant in cosmetics it is really "industrial antifreeze" and the major ingredient in brake and hydraulic fluid. Tests show it can be a strong skin irritant. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on Propylene Glycol warn to avoid skin contact as it is systemic and can cause liver abnormalities and kidney damage. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Harsh detergents and wetting agents used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and auto cleaning products. SLS is well-known in the scientific community as a common skin irritant. It is rapidly absorbed and retained in the eyes, brain, heart, and liver, which results in harmful long-term effects. SLS retards healing , cause cataracts in adults, and keep children's eyes from developing properly. Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) SLES is the alcohol form (ethoxylated) of SLS. It is slightly les irritating than SLS, but may cause more drying. Both SLS and SLES cause carcinogenic formations of nitrates and dioxins to form in shampoos and cleansers by reacting with other product ingredients. Large amounts of nitrates enter the blood system from just one shampooing. (*List of harmful ingredients quoted from http://www.time2care.com/harm.htm) So before buying your next soap, think about your future. Think about how you would like to spend it – sick or healthy.
